Freemasonry in Africa: Real Lodges, Scams and FAQs

By Bro Rick W.
AFRICAN FREEMASONRY – Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Namibia, Sierra Leone, Gambia, Nigeria and South African Regions (Version 1.9)

There seems to be a massive increase in questions on this page about joining from various nations from within Africa. This is basically a one-stop guide that I have put together to assist visitors interested in joining.

Let’s get the hard facts out of the way since there seems to be a lot of misunderstandings about Freemasonry……….

——————————————–
Firstly a warning; There are a number of fake Lodges operating in Africa. One of the most outrageous can (currently) be found at this link: http://sale.kbo.co.ke/  (follow this link only with caution and DO NOT engage with them in any way or provide information, it is a criminal scam with no ties to real Freemasonry!)

The promises of huge sums of Money will simply will NOT happen. This is a massive criminal deception, and as they become known, they are reported to the authorities. This one has been.
——————————————–

I have briefly seen a film that seems to be popular in Tanzania, called Devils Kingdom. This film has nothing whatsoever to do with Freemasonry. It is fictional, and is a basic, very low budget Horror Film that is designed to appeal to the African Horror fan. If you think that Freemasonry involves any of the sordid type of behaviors portrayed in the film, forget it. That doesn’t happen in a masonic Lodge.

FREEMASONRY WILL NOT GIVE YOU MONEY
IT WON’T MAKE YOU FAMOUS.
IT PROVIDES FOR HUMANITARIAN RELIEF, TO LIFEBOATS, AIR AMBULANCES AND HOSPITALS.
YOU HAVE TO PAY ANNUAL LODGE FEES WHICH ARE USED FOR THE UPKEEP OF THE LODGE BUILDING.

I’LL SAY IT AGAIN (IN CASE YOU MISSED IT FIRST TIME AROUND) FREEMASONRY WILL NOT MAKE YOU FAMOUS OR RICH, OR A HIP HOP STAR.
IT WILL NOT PAY FOR YOUR EDUCATION. IF YOU ARE THINKING THIS, PLEASE MOVE ALONG. FREEMASONRY IS NOT FOR YOU.

OK, if you’re still with us at this point, some administration…

This part is really important. This post isn’t an open invite to friend me, or private message me. Please don’t waste your time by sending me a friend request or private message. I don’t mean to be rude, but I won’t accept it, so don’t be put out when I just delete it.  The admin, Bruce Fenton will accept requests.

Don’t ask a question via a private message either, ask it on the Freemasons page where all the other Freemasons can see it. That way you get the benefit of their knowledge and wisdom.

The links below are to the best of my knowledge and belief Regular and Recognised Lodges. MOST are from English Constitution Lodges. If you go outside these links, I take no responsibility for the consequences.

Under no circumstances hand over any cash until you are actually inside a Lodge and about to be initiated. There are a few scams going on in Africa. Be cautious and don’t get caught out.

Before you embark on your Masonic journey, be aware that the process can take months and months….. We don’t just let anyone in! You will need to have some self initiative. If nobody replies to your e-mail, telephone, fax, look up their number in the Telephone Book, and if all else fails, visit them in person. There is very little those of us living outside Africa can do.

Nobody will call you from a Masonic Lodge first. You have to call them.

DO NOT PUT YOUR NUMBER ON FACEBOOK – NOBODY WILL CALL YOU FROM A LODGE!

This is an important part of becoming a Freemason, and will be explained in due course when you become a Freemason.

If you can’t answer yes to these questions, you may want to reconsider wanting to join;

Do you believe in a supreme being such as God, Allah, Yahweh, Krishna, Buddha, etc.?
Are you over the age of 21 years? (In some countries the minimum age is 18, so check when you first approach them)
Can you afford to pay your annual Lodge fees without putting yourself or your family in financial difficulties?
Are you able to devote 3 or 4 nights a Month to attend Lodge for Rehearsals, Meetings, and Lodges of Instructions?
Are you able to devote time, and/or money to assist those less fortunate than yourself?

and finally the big question;

Why do you want to be a Freemason? You will be asked this a lot during the process to join.

JUST IN CASE YOU FORGOT WHAT I POSTED ABOVE……Please bear in mind that Freemasonry will not make you Rich (probably the opposite), it won’t make you famous, and it won’t help you become a big Rap, Hip Hop or Dub Step Star. It won’t make you into a Politician capable of running the world. If this what you are thinking, stop reading now, forget about joining Freemasonry, and move on, it isn’t for you!

Thank You and I wish you well on your journey if it is an honorable one. Please don’t private message me or send me a friend request. Sometimes I reply, but mostly I just delete and block you. Watch out for those scams!

Admin note:  thanks Bro Rick for the post!

PS: Admin note #2    -  its almost certain that posting this post will cause an entire flurry of questions like “how do I join?” (only not so clearly written)    Please, take the time to read this and be respectful of the time of members.

The best place to connect is on the Freemasons Facebook page – just keep questions clear, in English and dont duplicate post.   You can connect with me personally at Bruce Fenton but I do not have time to answer private messages about Freemasonry, especially those which have been answered.

You might also want to take a look at the post How to Become a Freemason

Thanks again Bro Rick!

How to Become a Freemason

Featured

Hello to all Freemasons and those interested in Freemasonry,

The growth of the Freemasons Facebook page has been excellent and inspiring.   Tens of thousands of people from all over the world.   Thank you for making it a success.

For those who are interested in exploring Freemasonry for the first time, I thought I’d make this basic post to help answer a few common questions and help leverage time.

To become a Freemason, we have a saying

“To be one, ask one”

That’s, it, you ask a Freemason.

How do you find a Freemason?  If you know one, great – otherwise, look up the local Grand Lodge or local lodge (make sure it is not a scam) –  they usually have a website, and contact them.

It may take a while – dont be discouraged — also, if the lodge doesn’t get back to you after a month or two, go ahead and contact them again, its easy to slip through the cracks sometimes.

Next steps:

To join you must be male, age 18 or older (21-25 or older in certain jurisdictions) and you must believe in a Supreme Being (God, Allah, etc. – Freemasonry is open to men of Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist and other faiths)

I wanted to take a minute to help some of those who reach out.  Every day I get 3-4 chat requests, emails, questions even sometimes calls from non-masons, asking about joining.   I publicly list my name, profile and contact info because I love meeting new people from around the world and to connect with Freemasons and others everywhere.

First, a couple things should be noted:

-          I happen to be page admin but I am by no means any sort of Masonic leader or “head of the Freemasons” or anything like that at all!  There are MANY brethren on the Freemasons page with MUCH more knowledge and experience than me – in fact I’d say most by far, and I’m not being modest.

-          I don’t admin the page full time- I have a family and job and other responsibilities- so, while I absolutely love to connect with new people and love to meet new people and definitely welcome FB connections if you want to subscribe to my personal page – please be aware that I have limited time and if I answered everyone’s individual questions it would take several hours per day that I wished I had but do not.  Now please don’t take that as me saying I don’t want to hear from you, I do—please friend me, subscribe and let me know if you are a Freemason – I love to speak to and meet people and especially can talk about any areas related to my work (economics/ emerging markets, investments, business, even politics) if you want to invite me for coffee anywhere on earth I’m game –  but, if your question is “How do I join?” or “What are the Freemasons?”  (which I get several times per day) unfortunately it’s not likely I’ll have time to answer those questions, especially since they are answered so many times elsewhere.    The next group of common questions are from those who just joined or are about to and have questions about balloting, the first meetings etc. again, I wish I had time but I’m only one person, there are tens of thousands on the page so I’d encourage you to ask there.   [minor side note, if you are going to try to use the page and connection for fraud, don’t waste your time, we’ve got a couple good members with strong security backgrounds]

-          The very best people to answer questions about Freemasonry are local people, in your area you can meet face to face, the next best source is on the page by asking the public, this enables many members, most wiser than me, to have input and enables you to hear from a variety of people.

-          One reason I publicly disclose my name is because I am happy to build a network and meet people, welcome.

Now, for the most common questions- which related to “how do I join?” and “what is Freemasonry about?”   Please take a look at the Facebook page, the web page and ask around on the page as well.  As far as how to join, it’s simple.  To be one ask one.  Find a Freemason and ask him about joining.

If you are in a country that has no Masonic lodges this will be extremely difficult but if you have a local lodge, ask there.  (Also, be aware of phonies, and fake “Masonic” organizations- real ones are recognized by certain Grand Lodges, you can ask around if you have questions.

So , this post is a little uncomfortable because it seems to focus on “me” too much and that’s just to help some of those who contact me so often.  The Facebook page and web page is a great collaborative effort and it’s a privilege to be a steward of the ideas of so many.

To those interested in Freemasonry, welcome and feel welcome to connect with me personally as well.

To brethren everywhere lets connect and may we meet…..

I now open the post to additional advice, comments and wisdom from other bretheren.

Thanks!

-Bruce Fenton

Chennai to host World Freemason Conference in November

Chennai, Feb 5 : The city will host the world conference of Freemasons organized by the Grand Lodge of India in November. Two years ago, Chennai city witnessed the installation of a freemason grand master.

Freemasonry, sometimes just called Masonry, is the word’s oldest and largest Fraternity. It aims to promote Friendship, Morality, and Brotherly Love among its members — men from every race, religion, opinion, and background — who are brought together as Brothers to develop and strengthen the bonds of friendship.

There are more than 3 million members meeting in nearly every free country in the world. Freemasonry proposes to make good men better by teaching with metaphors taken from geometry and architecture, about building values based on great universal truths. And, charity and community service are fundamental to Freemasonry.

The last conference in India was held in New Delhi in the year 2002. This will be the second time that India is hosting the world conference of the free masons.

Fifty grand lodges and 500 masons from all over the world are expected to take part in this conference. Invitations to the conference have been sent to 140 grand lodges across the globe, which will be held across two days.

Dr Balaram Biswakumar, grand master, the grand Lodge of Ancient free and Accepted Masons (AF & AM) of India said, “We are looking forward to participation from the grand lodges of Paraguay, South Africa and Germany.”

The motive behind the conference will be to identify the role of Freemasonry in peacekeeping activities around the globe. Apart from the main address, there will be relevant sub-themes and associated with the geographies of the grand lodges. Masons will present papers related to the theme and the presentations will be held with discussions.

The conferences have revolved around subjects relevant to the 21st century in the past, which included environmental issues and role of women in Freemasons. Traditionally, only men were allowed to be Freemasons. The United Grand Lodge of England and others do not formally recognize any Masonic body that accepts women.

Nevertheless, female orders associated with regular Freemasonry such as Daughters of the Nile, Order of the Eastern Star and Order of the Amaranth have emerged in the past few years.

Every eighteen months, the world conferences of Freemasons are held. The last conference was held in Bogotá, Columbia, in the month of May in 2011.

How can you help?

- SPECIFIC IDEAS

Maybe you’d like to help but are not sure how–  here are just a few ideas:

- review the Freemasons Facebook page and capture some of the good content into more organized posts for this page

- gather web content such as lists of lodges and sites of interest (be careful of copyrighted material)

- collect photos and post them

- find appropriate videos on YouTube and post them (key word appropriate!)

- answer FAQs/  write information, guides etc. for new members, prospective members, the public etc.

- create best-practices lists of what works in your lodge for fundraising, attendance etc.

- write or publish masonic stories or histories

- networking for business and work

- give back- provide some advice, informational or other valuable, non-commercial content

- jokes, ideas etc.

Site ideas

With the success of the Freemasons Page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/freemasonspage it seems to make sense to link the page to this page, a blog/ website format which can allow for more in depth conversations, ideas and connections for Freemasons, friends and those interested in Freemasonry.

A few things that could be useful for this page:

- FAQs,  Frequently Asked Questions – especially for new members, prospective members and the general public

- Masonic networking – meet friends, lodge members and connect with others all over the world

- Facebook, LinkedIn and other professional and social networking

- Sharing of interesting Masonic information, trivia, photos, news and ideas which are suitable for a public forum

Ground rules

Be cautious that this is the Internet and to verify who exactly you are talking to.  Remember your obligations and publish only what is appropriate.  Other common sense- avoid dialogue with spammers and trolls, be respectful and have fun!

HOW YOU CAN HELP

We’ll need a LOT of great content — some good quality admins who can help monitor the site content, people who can write FAQs and people who can contribute research from around the web and better yet, items not yet on the web.

We’ll try to run this as organically and flat as possible – lets see what happens and surely there will be leaders who rise to the occasion with quality content and contributions.

Thank you in advance!

-Bruce Fenton
